Conference: A world without IMF is possible!

November 1st, 2006 in Berlin

Speakers:

Lidy Nacpil, Coordinator of the International Jubilee South Network and General Secretary of the »Freedom from Debt Coalition «, Philippines; activist against the Marcos regime

Antonio Tricarico, Coordinator of the Italian campaign to reform the World Bank (Campagna per la Riforma della Banca Mondiale/Mani Tese)

The International Monetary Fund is in a deep crisis. It is held responsible for the Asian- and Argentinian crisis. Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia and other "main clients" of the IMF have paid back their debts prematurely. »Once bitten, twice shy« they do not appreciate to have their economy and finance politics dictated by the IMF. Next to the loss of credibility it also has a fiscal problem: decreasing demand of credits goes along with decreasing interest income.

The IMF seems to have become irrelevant. If the emerging Asian countries and/or the OPEC would exchange their huge Dollar reserves while the motor of the US economy stutters, there could be a possible burst of the US economy bubble and drag the world economy down. Regarding this main concern of the global financial community the IMF has not much to offer. This is its main institutional problem.

In the past the IMF was central to the world economy and an essential tool of the G8 countries. Today it neither has the necessary currency reserves to prevent major crisis' nor do member states appreciate the conditions applied to credits. Only the poorest developing countries have no other chance but accept those terms and conditions.

But how? And which function will remain, how could they be redefined? And is it strategically wise to spend energy on this discussion?
